穆索斯基為俄國國民樂派作曲家，作曲技巧自學，極富獨創性、表現突出，擅長歌劇、藝術歌曲、鋼琴曲創作，鋼琴作品以「展覽會之畫」展覽會之畫最為著名。穆索斯基為前年去世的好友畫家哈特曼的追悼展覽會，在1874年舉行，根據當時的印象譜出這作品
